This is the only tube amplifier designed by a pedal steel player for a pedal steel player: big sound, high headroom, and power. The EQ and three knob reverb are customized just for pedal steel. With the Telonics 15" Neo speaker it makes for a lightweight and powerful steel guitar solution.
Guitar amps are designed for 6 string guitars, not for 10-12 string pedal steel guitars. Yes, the pedal steel is a guitar of sorts, but there is a completely different dynamic range to the instrument which I find that guitar amps are not designed to handle. Guitar amps are designed to break up and sag, because thats exactly what you want it to do while you are playing a guitar. The steel, on the other hand, begs for clarity. A proper steel amp needs to deliver power when the player asks for it, and guitar amps are designed to fight back. The natural compression that the power supply of a guitar amp creates – while great for guitar – is not ideal for the steel. The Milkman 85W Pedal Steel Amplifier has an overbuilt tube power supply coupled to a preamp circuit and reverb circuit designed exclusively for the steel guitar.
The Pedal Steel Amplifier comes standard with a 15" Telonics Neo magnet speaker. Dave at Telonics has captured the JBL K-130 sound in a high quality 7lb speaker. This makes the Milkman 85W Steel Amp weigh in at 55lbs - 20 pounds lighter than an Twin, and 30 pounds lighter than a Twin with JBL speakers.
The EQ is unique to pedal steel. The midrange is right were it needs to be, and the knobs are very usable including the taper of the volume knob. Even the bright switch, with its vintage Mica capacitor, is useful and smooth sounding.
Like the EQ, the three knob reverb system is designed to be smooth and usable at every setting. A custom option for this amp is tube buffered effect loop which can work in conjunction with the reverb circuit.
The Milkman Pedal Steel Amplifier is in a class of its own - each one is hand built onto a Garolite turret board using US made Jupiter and Allen Bradley components.
